Book title: Maximum Ice [+]*
Author: Kay Kenyon Posted April 24, 2003 Maximum Ice is set on a far future Earth where an impossible crystalline substance covers most of the planet, making the land barren. Humans survive in warrens scratched out of the crystal (which they call Ice) where they scavenge resources from the remains of old cities. Government is mostly local, but the Sisters of Clarity, a scientific society, has ultimate dominion over everything. The Sisters are organized like the old Catholic Church but they are not a religious order -- they seek clarity of mind through scientific exploration. It is to this Earth that the colony ship Star Road returns, after a long journey (10,000 years Earth time, 250 years ship time) to find a suitable planet for colonization. The ship's crew is made up of gypsies (literally) who were driven away from Earth before the tragedy that resulted in the growth of Ice. The (devoutly Catholic) gypsies have failed to find a new world and are facing calamity themselves. They are lead by Ship Mother, a woman from the old Earth who has been kept in stasis throughout the trip, awakening only during times of crisis. Ship Mother provides continuity with the traditions, goals and history of the gypsies. She's awakened now to help her people find a home in this strange new Earth. The story is a good one, with lots of action and fascinating characters. Kenyon has a real talent for creating complex, believable cultures that feel true. I recommend this book. |
